The USTA Member Organization of the Year award is given annually and recognizes the outstanding services of a USTA member organization through its commitment to the tennis community, the organizations members and the game of tennis. The award was instituted in 1981.
Opened in the fall of 2002, the Baseline Tennis Center at the University of Minnesota is one of the premier collegiate tennis venues in the nation, offering 10 indoor and 12 outdoor courts. The center, which houses both the schools mens and womens tennis teams, was recently recognized as one of 13 regional winners of the USTA Outstanding Facility Award and was also named one of the top-50 Tennis Welcome Centers in the nation. Baseline has played host to major tournaments and served as the home court for over 170 teams and more than 3,000 USTA League matches in 2008. It has extensive QuickStart Tennis and Wheelchair Tennis programs and even hosted the only Pre-Paralympics Training Camp in the United States prior to the 2008 Paralympics Games in Beijing this past summer.
Additionally, the Baseline Tennis Center continues to serve the tennis public at the highest level, touching every tennis constituency juniors, adults, seniors, super seniors, adaptive players, beginners and frequent players. To further encourage community involvement, the center offered discounted court time for the Senior Tennis Players Club and donated free court time for a number of St. Paul Urban Tennis events. Not resting on its laurels, the Baseline Tennis Center continues to make major improvements to its facility, including new 100-foot candles for the 10 indoor courts and new Daktronics digital scoreboards for its six show courts. The facility also completely resurfaced the indoor courts in time for the 2008 USTA League and tournament seasons.
